Writing Assignment 1: Letter from a Sin Vergüenza

Due Mon Oct 6th, 4pm PT

Sin vergüenza literally translates to “without shame.” It’s a term used all across the Diaspora to also make a statement about the behavior of young girls or independent women. And gays and queers. Anyone who struts or laughs too loud. And still, it’s a term of endearment that honors curiosity, brilliance, and/or ability to be so damn funny you make your grandma pee herself in the supermarket. It’s time to step into our collective power, brilliance, and legacy as writers.

Let’s write some letters. Let’s connect with our ancestors. Trust yourself and move with confidence.

        Step 1: Read & Reflect

        Step 2: Write Your Letter

        Your letter should:

        • Tell us who you are & who that ancestor is
        • Share what you believe in
        • Explain why you are a sin vergüenza

Use your flash writing as a starting point. Expand on it with:

        • Details of place
        • Descriptions of sound

        Step 3: Draft & Revise

        1. First Draft
          Aim for a full draft
        2. Second Draft (Additions)
Edit but don’t delete anything yet.
Add two more moments and a few extra important details.
        3. Final Pass
Read your letter all the way through.
          Remove one thing

        Step 4: Submit

        • Turn in your completed letter.
